Gavin and Stacey doc sparks frenzy as it ends with footage from infamous fishing trip
Gavin and Stacey: A Fond Farewell saw the cast of the much-loved sitcom reunite to mark 10 years since the last episode – and viewers were left stunned by the ending of the show.
Gavin and Stacey: A Fond Farewell left fans of the beloved sitcom in a state of shock as it unveiled never-before-seen footage of Uncle Bryn and Jason’s infamous fishing trip, a long-standing joke throughout the series.
The hour-long special featured celebrity fans such as Minnie Driver, Richard Curtis and Lena Dunham expressing their love for the show, while the cast, led by James Corden and Ruth Jones, reflected on their 18-year journey since the show first aired in 2007.
However, it was the surprise footage shown during the end credits that truly excited viewers at home. The shaky, handheld camcorder-style clip showed Rob Brydon (Bryn) and Rob Wilfort (Jason) dressed in period-appropriate clothing, supposedly from their ill-fated fishing trip years ago.
The enigmatic fishing trip has been a source of tension between the uncle and nephew throughout the original three series, with only Dave Coaches (Steffan Rhodri) knowing the full story.
Every time the tale is about to be revealed, something invariably interrupts, keeping the mystery alive.
Audiences were treated to an Easter egg bonus scene of the infamous fishing trip, which showed Bryn greeting Jason, who was holding a fish, with the words: “Who do we have here?”
Bryn also quipped: “No one will go hungry in this camp tonight.”
“Enjoy your soup!” he added, as the screen faded to black, reports Wales Online.
Fans of the show took to social media to share their delight at the surprise footage, with one exclaiming: “THE FISHING TRIP! ! ! What a way to close the entirety of this whole story!” (sic)
Another posted on X: “The fishing trip…brilliant ending.” (sic)
The brief glimpse into the fishing trip had been eagerly anticipated, with viewers also aware that it was very cold, the soup was on the fire, and whatever occurred “wasn’t illegal”.
Gavin and Stacey: A Fond Farewell is on BBC iPlayer now.
