“From Fake Birds to Fashion Faux Pas: The Illusion of ‘Old Money'”

-

In 2023, a seller in Karachi transformed a common chicken into a fake exotic bird by using spray paint. The altered bird was advertised online as a “unique parrot with distinct wings and tail” for a price of 23 dollars. The incident sparked amusement among people and went viral on the internet, evolving into a harmless joke. However, this anecdote continues to resonate with me for a different reason.

Upon observing current fashion trends more closely, it becomes apparent how frequently we are drawn to similar illusions. While clothing colors, styles, and aesthetics can be altered, one cannot simply fabricate a new identity through superficial changes. This phenomenon is exemplified by the emergence of products marketed as embodying “old money” values. The term is often applied to items that are beige, simple, or neutral, as if a specific color scheme could bestow a heritage that is not authentically present.

“Old money” is not merely a fashion category but a lifestyle shaped by inherited wealth, generational comfort, and a sense of privilege where confidence transcends the need for embellishment. Consequently, the contemporary interpretation of the “old money look” feels insincere, as it attempts to replicate a life experience it does not genuinely comprehend.

Essentially, old money denotes inherited prosperity. In Bangla, it is known as “bonedi poribar,” denoting families with a longstanding legacy of affluence, privilege, and understated influence. Individuals born into this milieu have no need to prove themselves; their elegance lies in their simplicity, as true confidence emanates effortlessly from their experiences.

However, social media has distorted this concept into a superficial formula. By donning beige trousers, a tucked-in polo shirt, and perhaps a pair of loafers, individuals may erroneously believe they are embodying the essence of “old money.” This trend signifies a performance rather than a genuine style—a borrowed facade masquerading as authenticity.

Further distortions are evident in fashion trends, such as the recent shift from tight-fitting pants to flared or wide-legged styles, now touted as representative of “old money.” This shift does not reflect heritage but rather a fickle cycle of trend adoption.

This fixation on appearances permeates various aspects of fashion. Some individuals chase clothing emblazoned with oversized designer logos in a bid to construct an identity around a brand, while others exude timeless elegance by donning a traditional khadi panjabi tailored by a local craftsman. While one group plays a role, the other embodies authenticity, ensuring enduring style regardless of passing trends.

The crux of the matter lies in the imposition of trends. Influencers often dictate what is fashionable without a profound understanding of the values they are promoting. In doing so, they distort the essence of tailoring, fit, and significance. True “old money” style transcends superficial attire, emphasizing liberation from the need for external validation.

Therefore, as your Sartorial Strategist, I offer the following advice:

– Cultivate a personal style rather than chasing fleeting aesthetics. A timeless style will outlive transient trends.
– Prioritize quality over quantity. A well-tailored regular-fit pant will outlast numerous trendy alternatives.
– Embrace your clothing as an extension of your authenticity. Garments exude confidence when they seamlessly integrate into your lifestyle.

Ultimately, the essence of “old money” is not sewn into garments but woven into history. For the majority, genuine style begins and ends with authenticity. A combination of authenticity and quality ensures enduring fashion appeal that transcends passing trends.
