The defeat was the first of the season for the Khulna Tigers, as they were bowled out for 152 while chasing a mammoth 232 posted by the Thunder
Devastating batting performances from West Indian batsmen Andre Fletcher and Johnson Charles have earned Sylhet Thunder their first win of the Bangabandhu Bangladesh Premier League T20, as they triumphed over Khulna Tigers by 80 runs at Chittagong’s Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium Saturday.
The defeat was the first of the season for the Khulna Tigers, as they were bowled out for 152 while chasing a mammoth 232 posted by the Thunder.
The Tigers had won the toss and elected to field first.
Sylhet Thunder lost opener Abdul Mazid early on, in the first over of their innings. However, other opener Fletcher and No 3 Charles did not miss a beat, putting on a 150-run partnership for the third wicket.
Right-handed batsman Charles was aggressor, smacking the bowlers all over the park for a score of 90 off just 38 deliveries before he was dismissed lbw by medium pacer Shahidul Islam.
@SylhetThunder‘s Andre Fletcher expressed delight after scoring his maiden T20 hundred and coming to the rescue of his side, who finally tasted victory in the Bangabandhu @BCBtigers Bangladesh Premier League Twenty20 after four consecutive losseshttps://t.co/1WaM6reRev#BCB #BPL
However, Fletcher was still unbeaten at the end of the innings, notching his first century in the T20 format.
Fletcher’s innings of 103 off 57 balls included 11 fours and 5 sixes, the same as Charles, as the Thunder posted the fourth highest total in BPL T20 history.
Sylhet lost a total five wickets while setting the chase, and five out of the six Khulna Tigers bowlers had economy rates over 11.
Robiul Haque suffered the most at the hands of Fletcher and Charles, leaking 44 runs in his four overs for an economy rate of 14.66 with one wicket.
South African all-rounder Robbie Frylinck was the pick of the Tigers bowlers, with two wickets for 37 runs in his four overs.
The massive total on the board had Khulna under pressure from the very beginning, and opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz was dismissed for a golden duck on the first ball of the innings.
The side needed almost 12 runs an over for a successful chase, and the Thunder capitalized with some disciplined bowling.
Sylhet pacer Ebadat Hossain gave away just 17 runs in his 3.3 overs, picking up two wickets, while controversial Windies bowler Krishmar Santokie bagged three wickets.
In-form batsman Rilee Rossouw gave Khulna some hope with another half century in the tournament, a 32-ball 52, while Robert Frylinck added 44 to the tally off 20 balls.
However, the loss of wickets at regular intervals ensured an end to Khulna’s winning run.
