Police deny family’s claim of death in law enforcement’s custody
A former leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League allegedly died in police custody hours after he was picked up from Damurhuda upazila of Chuadanga on Saturday.
The deceased, Jahid Hasan, 40, was a former vice-president of the ruling party student wing’s Chuadanga district unit and from the upazila’s Joyrampur village.
Damurhuda police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Khaleq said: “A Damurhuda police team conducted a raid at Joyrampur village and detained Jahid with two bottles of phensedyl on Saturday afternoon.”
“At one point, Jahid fell ill and was taken to the Upazila Health Complex. As his condition deteriorated, Jahid was moved to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment,” Khaleq claimed.
Jahid’s wife Lipi Khatun contradicted police’s version, claiming: “Police beat Jahid to death in a planned way with backing from his political rivals.”
However, the district’s Civil Surgeon SM Maruf Hossain said: “During primary check-up, no injury marks were found on Jahid’s body. We will know the actual cause of death after the autopsy.”
