Donald and Melania Trump were spotted grooving to the president elect’s favourite song at Mar-a-Lago in a cringey New Year’s Eve video.
Melania was seen swaying to the Village People’s 1978 “YMCA” anthem on Tuesday alongside her husband in Palm Beach, Florida, as the pair entertained the crowd with his dad dance moves which he regularly used during election campaign rallies.
“It’s fun to stay at the YMCA!!!! Happy new year all!” Donald’s eldest child, son Donald Trump Jr., 47, captioned in an Instagram video, showing Melania grooving to the song as she mouthed the lyrics to the track and moved her hands as she bobbed about.
Social media users were surprised with the incoming First Lady’s efforts, which went viral, with one X user saying: “Never in my life did I think Melania Trump would be jamming to YMCA on New Year’s. Trump has infected the whole country, including his family and Elon Musk, with his dance moves. Everyone is doing it.’
“Love Melania doping her own moves to YMCA,'” another said. “And how some people can’t crack a smile at Trump doing his dance is beyond me.”
Also in attendance was Trump’s close friend Elon Musk, who seemed to be in good spirits as he carried his mini-me son X AE A-Xii – who wore a near-matching suit to his dad – inside. Elon smiled as his son held onto his face for support on his shoulders.
It comes as the club held a New Year’s Eve bash Tuesday night that featured Trump, who spoke briefly to reporters near a red carpet rolled out for the occasion. He appeared briefly onstage addressing revellers, who included Love and many of his choices for Cabinet and other posts in his upcoming administration. During dinners with friends and family, Trump uses the Spotify account on his tablet to play many of the same tunes that were ubiquitous at his campaign rallies.
Famous figures such as Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Tesla and X owner Elon Musk have previously popped up at breakfasts, luncheons and other social gatherings held daily at the Mar-a-Lago club.
Over the weekend, Mike Love, one of the original members of the Beach Boys, performed the band’s greatest hits under an outdoor tent there as Trump, trailed by Secret Service agents, wandered through the crowd, swinging his fists to the music, according to videos posted online.
At other parts of the evening, he stood next to his wife, Melania, near the pool, bobbing his head to the music. The resort is the “Centre of the Universe,” Trump declared on social media on Friday, adding, “Bill Gates asked to come, tonight.” Representatives for Trump and Gates didn’t clarify if the Microsoft co-founder did indeed join the parade of figures making the trip to Mar-a-Lago.
