Pharmacies and emergency services are exempted
Police in Dhaka have ordered all kitchen markets and superstores to close their businesses by 7pm every day amid the ongoing government-enforced shutdown to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic.
However, pharmacies and emergency services are exempted from the order, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam.
In a notification, the DMP said that kitchen markets and superstores will remain open between 6am and 7pm, while grocery shops and departmental stores in all neighbourhoods have to close by 2pm.
The Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) on Monday also issued the same order for all shops, kitchen markets and superstores in the port city.
The moves come amid the novel coronavirus pandemic with fears of community transmission coming true in clusters in different areas of the country.
On Monday, the health authorities confirmed 35 new cases of Covid-19, the disease caused by a new coronavirus strain, in Bangladesh, taking the tally of positive cases to 123.
It was the highest number of cases recorded on a single day since the first three were reported on March 8.
The authorities on Monday also confirmed that three more Covid-19 patients also died in the last 24 hours, which means the death toll now stands at 12.
