The incidents of Cyber Crime in Bangladesh have been increasing for the last few years. Unfortunately, with technology on the rise, there is more room for cybercrime in the coming years as well.
In the past, law enforcement agencies struggled to deal with the proficiency of cybercriminals. Recently, the Bangladesh police have become much more equipped to deal with such criminals.
The Cyber Security & Crime Division, CTTC, DMP of Bangladesh Police is the pioneer in curbing cybercrime in the country. Dhruba Jeotirmoya Gope is one young stellar officer working in this department.
He has been solving many high profile critical cases and arresting criminals without fail. For his admirable and meritorious work, he received the highest state recognition of Bangladesh Police “Bangladesh Police Medal (BPM-Service)” in the week 2020. Besides, he receives special awards almost every month for his excellent work in the monthly crime conferences of DMP.
Dhruba Jeotirmoya Gope is known to be a reliable and dedicated officer among his colleagues. They laud his utmost sincerity and honesty. But among the cybercriminals, Dhruba is a name of terror.
Some of the noteworthy cases that he solved are – Detection and arrest of the hacker of more than two hundred Facebook IDs, Detection and arrest of the hacker of popular website Bisoy.com, Identification and arrest for publishing secret videos of women colleagues of Arrong, Detection, and arrest for Defaming the Father of the Nation,
Detection and arrest of Bank Fraudsters, Detection, and arrest of foreign criminals for counterfeiting currency, Detection, and arrest of ATM Card Fraudsters, Detection, and arrest of the head of the media division of the banned terrorist organization Neo JMB, etc.
Originally from Mirzapur, Tangail, Dhruba Jeotirmoya Gope was born on 6 September 1989 in Dhaka. He completed his BS & MS in Applied Physics, Electronics & Communication Engineering from the University of Dhaka in 2011 & 2012 respectively.
Later, he completed his MBA from the University of Dhaka’s Institute of Business Administration. Earlier, he passed Secondary School Certificate from St. Gregory High School and Higher Secondary Certificate from Dhaka College.
After completing his studies, he joined the Bangladesh Police as Assistant Superintendent of Police on June 1, 2016, through the 34th BCS examination. Since joining, he has been working as the Assistant Commissioner of the Cyber Security & Crime Division of the Counter-Terrorism & Transnational Crime (CTTC) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
In addition to his regular police duties, Dhruba Jeotirmoya Gope has been a pioneer in building awareness about cyber-related crimes in Bangladesh. He gives talks, interviews, and conducts training programs among the young citizens of the country.
When asked what are his most essential tips to be safe from cybercriminals, Dhruba Jeotirmoya Gope suggests to –
1. Be careful about one’s own internet security, such as use a complex password, two-factor authentication and trusted contacts
2. Do not share your password, PIN, or any other sensitive financial or private information with anyone. Not saving passwords in public devices and logging out after using are also good internet hygiene.
3. Browse only secure and safe websites.
4. Be very cautious about sharing private and intimate photos with anyone.
5. Verify the authenticity of the information published on the Internet before believing or sharing.
