In an interview with Dhaka Tribune’s Ali Asif Shawon, Bangladesh Awami League Publicity and Publication Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud, also the information minister, expresses his belief in the next generation to help lead the party forward. This is part of a series of interviews ahead of the Awami League National Council on December 20-21
What makes the Awami League council so special?
The national council is an important milestone for our country. In every council, we have issued new directions for the nation. In 1966, in the council of former East Pakistan Awami League, where Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was elected as the party president, the program started with a Rabindranath Tagore song that has now become our national anthem.
Bangladesh is going to fulfil Bangabandhu’s dream under the leadership of his daughter Sheikh Hasina. We are a middle-income country now. Our development is an example to the rest of the world.
What is the main focus of this council?
Before the national council, the district and upazila unit councils were organized. Our party leader has given a message to the grassroots leaders – dedicated party activists will be rewarded with leadership roles. We have seen changes where it was necessary. The national council reflects the directions of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
What changes can we expect?
The party always modernizes and reorganizes itself by combining new and old leaders. The upcoming council will continue the tradition.
Will there be any specific changes in the central committee?
It all depends on the party president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. If she thinks she needs to consult her trusted colleagues, she will do it as she has done before. Mixing up young and senior leaders to inject fresh blood is something we have always done. I think it will also happen again.
What is the Awami League Publicity and Publications Sub-Committee doing?
I have been serving as the publicity and publications secretary in two consecutive terms. We developed the slogan for this council. We have published posters, cards, banners, festoons, souvenirs, and books around the council. We have also prepared a card compiling all party achievements under Sheikh Hasina.
