Claudia Winkleman reveals how Traitors are chosen and admits she cried over one scene
The Traitors is returning to the TV screens and Claudia Winkleman has revealed the process that picks the contestants and admits she cries during one episode
Claudia Winkleman has revealed how The Traitors are chosen as she shared some behind-the-scenes secrets from the hit BBC series.
Claudia will be back on New Year’s Day with the latest group who will be looking to win The Traitors and they will be brought together at a castle in the Scottish Highlands to undertake a number of challenges. Among the contestants there will be three ‘traitors’ who will be looking to undermine the efforts of the group.
At a Q&A with the media ahead of the new series beginning, Claudia gave an insight into the process that is used to determine who makes the cut for the show from all those who apply to take part as traitors. Claudia herself is involved in this process but she says that she is just a “small voice” among those who make the decisions. She admitted: “I’m not a goddess and I don’t choose them by myself.”

Claudia then detailed the selection protocol, saying: “We talk to all of them in that room and then we go into a room there’s 5 of us, 6 of us. It is very stressful. And then you place it all. Everybody, I mean, I’m just the smallest voice in the room, but you, you decide, having had those chats, who it is going to be.”

Ultimately, Claudia says she believes in the final decision and feels it will be for the best for the show. She said: “I have faith And whether I was correct or wrong, we will find out. They’re always the right three. It could have been a different three, but it was those three and after you’ve spoken to them all that felt like the right three.”

The show’s host said there was a moment when she became emotional during the upcoming series and shed a tear or two during one particular moment. Claudia said that when one contestant was told that their time was up on the show, she couldn’t welling up over it. She said: “I really cried when somebody was banished this year, but properly cried. And in a way that I thought was probably unhealthy. The cameras are all completely hidden in the roundtable and two of them came out, and they were also crying. [So], three of us cried together. We go in deep.”
Claudia admitted that emotions had been at an all-time high during this season’s roundtables and that whenever a decision is made, she really feels it. She explained: “There’s a roundtable moment where we were all shaking. That’s happened before, but I never want to leave.”
