Double The Money, the Channel 4 quiz show presented by actress and comedian Sue Perkins, has been cancelled after just one series.
Compared to BBC’s The Apprentice, the series had pairs of contestants battling it out to win a possible £20,000 by doubling their cash throughout the six episodes in any way possible. In each episode the teams assembled in ‘The Vault’ – a gilded banking hall where they were given an initial starting sum of money and a time limit. They then had to race against the clock to double that sum of money in the allotted time. If they made it back to the Vault with double the amount, they stayed in. If they came back with even £1 less, they were eliminated.
The rules meant they could use any money making schemes they could think of to double their money as long as they didn’t use the same idea twice. The contestants’ schemes included bingo nights, cocktail classes, a food festival and even an erotic art workshop as the 13 couples, including sisters, a father and son, married couples and best friends, all fought to stay in the competition and win the grand prize.
When it was shown in May 2024, quiz show fans were divided over the concept. Some loved it, with one fan writing: “Really enjoying this. I’d love to play it #doublethemoney,” while another said: “Loving a bit of #DoubleTheMoney – like the good bits of The Apprentice, without the idiots and plastic wannabes! Always makes a show watchable too,” and a third added: ”I loved watching this show, it is absolutely brilliant! I hope that it will be back next year!”
However, some were not as impressed and spotted a flaw in the rules. “I’m enjoying #doublethemoney but I don’t buy some of the results. Seems edited. Also, the way the show has been set up means a certain number of teams need to succeed every week or it’s game over.” Another agreed, writing: “This #DoubletheMoney show is a bit of a weak concept. If they all fail to double their money one week, that’s it. Show’s over, folks.”
TVZone has reported that Double The Money won’t be returning for a second series. Meanwhile 55 year old Sue Perkins, who is best known as the former presenter of The Great British Bake Off, has been focusing on making travel shows for Channel 4 and Channel 5. She made two series for Channel 5 in 2024 where she travelled to Thailand and Alaska, and also made Sue Perkins’ Big Adventure: Paris to Istanbul for Channel 4.
Sue is also expected to be back on our screens later this year as host of Chess Masters, a new BBC Two competition series focused on the classic board game that has seen a surge in popularity since the release of the 2020 TV series The Queen’s Gambit.
