“Breaking Barriers: Cultivating Authenticity in Workplace Culture”

-

In my youth, sharing my parents’ stories with peers in Dhaka revealed the stark contrast in experiences, particularly regarding freedom of expression. Like any city, Dhaka is segmented into various spheres based on finances and beliefs, a division I encountered in the workplace due to my Arts and Humanities background. It became apparent that certain circles enjoyed ideal relationships while those outside faced a different reality, showcasing the gatekeeping tendency of progressive bubbles.

In my professional journey, I have endeavored to challenge this mindset by promoting inclusivity and openness, believing that leadership can stem from any role. Working across different global settings reinforced the notion that influence can flow both bottom-up and top-down.

One prevalent strategy in “deshi workplaces” is the use of flattery, which I have observed to have fleeting success. People-pleasing, although initially appealing, fails to garner genuine respect and may lead to self-disrespect in the long run. True effectiveness lies in maintaining authenticity and avoiding succumbing to external pressures.

Efficiency in tasks necessitates focus and minimal disruption rather than haste, as quality outcomes result from creativity and contemplation, not survival-mode strategies. The world may favor swift actions, but true leadership lies in emotional regulation and thoughtful decision-making that impacts lives beyond personal realms.

Identifying the barriers hindering authentic expression among many “deshis,” regardless of success levels, remains a challenge. In professional settings, conformity often stifles originality, emphasizing the need for employees to think independently without excessive reliance on hierarchical guidance.

The evolution of employment dynamics, resembling factory-like structures even in high-education roles, signifies a shift away from meaningful work. Amid technological advancements, reevaluating career choices to align with personal values can mitigate burnout and foster a sense of purpose.

Choosing to work for a cause or organization one genuinely believes in can transform one’s professional experience, emphasizing the significance of individual impact in the broader organizational context. Encouraging systemic change through creative actions can empower individuals at all levels to shape a positive workplace culture.
