Daily Dhaka Times: Bidi labourer union leaders expressed protest on the Finance Minister’s recent comment on shutting off the industry of poor people. The organization leaders shared their protest from a press conference at Jatiya Press Club on Wednesday.
Earlier on July 30, after a meeting with the tobacco companies, Finance Minister AHM Muhith told the journalist have said that the bidi and low-cost chigarate will be prohibited from the government.
Terming the Finance Minister’s comment as ‘representative of foreign multinational tobacco companies’, the federation leaders echoed that the government has to offer alternative work sources for the marginalized bidi workers.
Joint secretary Abdur Rahman, Development agency RDS General Secretary Jannat E Ferdoushi, assistant secretary Harip Hussain and social welfare secretary Pronop Debnath were, among others, spoke on the occasion.
Addressing the meeting Prof Mezbah Kamal said the Finance Minister wants to broaden the market for cigarettes and realize the blueprint of destruction for bidi industry. The market will be given to the British American Tobacco.
On the other hand, British American Tobacco takes away thousands of millions of money from country. For this 20 million bidi labour will be unemployed. By this, government image is being tarnished to the hardworking mass.
Joint Secretary Abdur Rahman said the Minister roles to satisfy his foreign lord, finance minister is snatching our meal. To meet our demands, we will starve to death around prime minister office if needed. We hope, graceful prime minister will give us a solution before that.
The Federation leaders gave thanks to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for reducing the tax for the industry.
