BBC presenter pays tribute as career comes to an end after staggering 40 years

-

A BBC star has issued a tribute to their colleague after quitting the broadcaster.

Look North presenter Phillip Norton shared a message to their co-star who decided to bow out after working for the BBC for a staggering 40 years. Alongside a photo of colleague Nigel, Phillip said: “End of an era tonight- this is our lovely director Nigel Clarke, who after 40 years and directing thousands of @looknorthBBC bulletins, is pressing the buttons one last time before he retires.

“Thanks for everything Nigel- and sorry you’ve got me for your final show.” A viewer also shared: “The back bone of the profession. Unsung heroes.” Another added: “All the very best to you.”

There have been a number of departures from the BBC in recent weeks, including presenter Jenny Hill. She took to social media to reveal the news that she was stepping down from her job as foreign correspondent for the organisation. Sharing a statement, Jenny said: “Personal update: I’m leaving the BBC today after 24 years. What a privilege it’s been to travel the world and tell people’s stories.

“Thanks to the many lovely colleagues whose talent, courage and friendship have made it such a pleasure.” Among those commenting on her announcement was BBC News analysis editor Ros Atkins, who penned: “We’re going to miss you, Jenny. Best of luck.” Chief international correspondent Lyse Doucet also shared a touching note, saying: “Such a distinctive broadcaster and kind colleague. So sorry to see you go Jenny.”

In March last year, BBC Look North lost one of their main presenters as Jeff Brown quit after two decades. A well known face to everyone in the region, Jeff had been a hugely popular member of the team since 2003 with sport his speciality, but him also helping to front the news bulletins on a regular basis.

It was Jeff himself who broke the news that he was leaving Look North but hinted that we haven’t seen the last of him just yet. He wrote: “News just in…after nearly 21yrs with BBC Look North ⁦ @BBCLN I’m moving on. Projects in the pipeline with BBC & others, but (as you can see) it’s been fun, and a huge, wonderful part of my life. Thanks for watching.”

In a statement released by the BBC, Jeff said: “Presenting BBC Look North – filling the seat once occupied by the great Mike Neville – has been the undoubted highlight of my career, something I could never have imagined when I set out as a journalist. It has been an absolute pleasure and a privilege to work with such talented and dedicated teams over the years, and I’m proud to count them as my friends. I’m also truly grateful to the many people and organisations across the North East and Cumbria who have allowed me to tell their stories, and to be welcomed into hundreds of thousands of homes every night.”

He went on to say more about his glittering career and added: “Sport has always been my passion – whatever colour the team is wearing, or the shape of the ball! I hope I’ve been able to reflect the depth of feeling fans have for their teams, because in that respect our region is unique”.
