“Bangladesh to Receive Ongoing WTO Support Post-Graduation”

-

The World Trade Organization (WTO) has confirmed that Bangladesh will receive ongoing support and technical assistance as it prepares for its transition from Least Developed Country (LDC) status in 2026. WTO Deputy Director-General Xiangchen Zhang mentioned in an online interview with BSS that Bangladesh will have access to technical assistance even after graduating. Bangladesh currently benefits from various activities within the WTO’s Technical Assistance and Training Plan and collaborates with other international organizations to enhance trade capacity in developing nations.

Regarding the Enhanced Integrated Framework (EIF), Zhang emphasized Bangladesh’s significant participation in the program, aiding LDCs in becoming active players in global trade. As the EIF enters its third phase, Bangladesh will have a five-year extension to continue enjoying its benefits post-graduation. Through the EIF, Bangladesh has strengthened its food processing capabilities and crafted strategies to diversify its garment industry to elevate its position in the value chain.

Bangladesh has been a notable beneficiary of the WTO’s Aid for Trade Initiative, receiving US$23 billion between 2006 and 2023, ranking among the top ten global recipients. Zhang praised Bangladesh’s robust institutional framework concerning the WTO, particularly highlighting the WTO Reference Centre at the Bangladesh Foreign Trade Institute (BFTI), offering access to trade-related information and documents.

Zhang noted that Bangladesh, historically part of the LDC Group, will need to adjust its approach post-graduation. After transitioning, Bangladesh must concentrate on forming strategic partnerships with WTO Members across various development levels. This strategic shift represents a key challenge for Bangladesh after graduating.
