“Bangladesh Grapples with Rise of Mob Rule”

-

In Bangladesh, the rise of “ochlocracy,” characterized by mob rule over legal governance, poses a significant and immediate threat. This phenomenon signifies a breakdown of the rule of law, where justice is overshadowed by the actions of enraged crowds incited by rumors, outrage, or political motives rather than factual evidence or proper legal proceedings. Consequently, the judiciary is sidelined, legal protocols are disregarded, and lives are negatively impacted without the due process of charge, trial, or truth.

Instances of mob violence have become alarmingly frequent in recent times, with individuals, sometimes falsely accused, facing lynching by unruly mobs over allegations of theft or abduction. Social media platforms have been instrumental in spreading baseless rumors that manipulate crowds, often targeting political opponents or marginalized groups. University campuses have turned into arenas of heightened tension where rational discourse is drowned out by noisy protests. A particularly disturbing incident involved a former chief election commissioner being physically assaulted outside his home before police intervention and subsequent arrest. This event gained international attention, highlighting the entrenched nature of mob culture in Bangladesh and the failure of law enforcement to act promptly or effectively in such situations.

The roots of mob rule in Bangladesh trace back to a long-standing erosion of trust in public institutions and accountability mechanisms that dates back to the country’s early years. Successive governments’ failure to establish a robust and impartial justice system paved the way for political violence, impunity, and the politicization of institutions, fostering an environment conducive to mob justice. The erosion of judicial authority and state legitimacy has been a gradual process fueled by a lack of institutional development and governance reforms.

Several factors have exacerbated the current crisis. Widespread distrust in the police, judiciary, and administrative systems has led many citizens to seek vigilante justice outside the legal framework. The unregulated nature and rapid dissemination of information on social media have facilitated the spread of misinformation and public hysteria, triggering violent responses based on falsified narratives. Furthermore, in a polarized political landscape, certain actors have exploited or endorsed mob violence for intimidation or retribution, blurring the line between legitimate protest and chaotic unrest.

The repercussions of mob rule extend beyond social and political realms to have profound economic implications. An environment lacking the rule of law and public order dissuades both local and foreign investments due to the unpredictability and instability it engenders. Investors prioritize jurisdictions with legal predictability and robust institutions. In the face of mob impunity and the prevalence of violent conflict resolution, capital flight becomes a foreseeable outcome. Comparable scenarios in other countries, such as Nigeria and India, where mob violence has disrupted economic activities and deterred investments, serve as cautionary tales for Bangladesh. The absence of legal enforcement and property rights security hampers economic growth, leading to job losses and market stagnation.

Critically, denouncing mob rule and upholding the rule of law does not equate to defending criminals but rather ensuring that all individuals, irrespective of their status, are subject to fair legal processes. A functional legal system is the cornerstone of justice, guaranteeing due process and equality before the law. In contrast, mob violence often targets the innocent or wrongly accused, perpetuating a cycle of arbitrary retribution that undermines civil liberties, social stability, and the fundamental principles of justice.

The prevalence of mob justice is not unique to Bangladesh but has been observed in various countries facing governance challenges. To avoid descending into chaos, Bangladesh must take decisive action at the state and societal levels. Strengthening law enforcement agencies, ensuring judicial independence, and enforcing laws against incitement are imperative state-level measures to restore public trust in legal institutions. Simultaneously, integrating civic education emphasizing respect for the rule of law and fostering community-led conflict resolution mechanisms can help curb vigilante tendencies at the societal level. Responsible journalism, promoting fact-based reporting over sensationalism, can play a pivotal role in de-escalating tensions and fostering informed public discourse.

Bangladesh stands at a critical juncture, faced with the choice of either succumbing to mob rule or reasserting the principles of justice and institutional governance. This decision is not solely the responsibility of government officials and judicial bodies but rests on the collective commitment of all citizens. Upholding the rule of law, demanding institutional accountability, and championing legal processes over street justice are essential steps in steering Bangladesh toward a future governed by principles of justice and order.
