Bangladesh Ends ODI Series Loss Streak, Defeats West Indies by 179 Runs

-

Bangladesh put an end to their streak of four consecutive ODI series losses by convincingly defeating the West Indies by 179 runs in the decisive third match at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur. This victory secured a 2-1 series win for the Tigers, marking their first bilateral ODI triumph since March 2024 against Sri Lanka and also serving as Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s first series win as captain.

The match saw an exceptional performance by Bangladesh’s spinners as they bowled out the West Indies for only 117 runs in 30.1 overs while defending their total of 296 for 8. Impressively, all 10 West Indies wickets fell to spin, with no need for Bangladesh to utilize their sole pacer, Mustafizur Rahman.

Nasum Ahmed led the bowling attack with figures of 3 for 11, while Rishad Hossain claimed 3 for 54. Tanvir Islam and captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz also contributed with two wickets each, as the hosts completely dismantled the West Indies batting lineup. Despite some resistance from Akeal Hosein, who scored a quick 27 off 15 balls, the West Indies fell short. The 179-run victory margin now stands as Bangladesh’s second-largest win in ODIs, just behind their 183-run win over Ireland in 2023.

In the batting department, openers Soumya Sarkar and Saif Hassan provided a solid foundation for Bangladesh with a record partnership of 176 runs off 152 balls. Soumya scored 91 runs, while Saif notched his maiden ODI half-century with 80 runs. This partnership ended Bangladesh’s long wait for a century opening stand in 45 ODI innings. Following the openers’ departure, Towhid Hridoy and Najmul Hossain Shanto contributed with a 50-run partnership before a late collapse saw Bangladesh lose quick wickets.

With contributions from Nurul Hasan Sohan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Bangladesh posted 296 for 8, a total that proved too much for the West Indies to chase on a spinning track. The left-arm spin duo of Nasum Ahmed and Tanvir Islam continued to dominate, reducing the West Indies to 74-4 after 15 overs, setting the tone for Bangladesh’s series-deciding victory in Mirpur.
