“Bangladesh Election Commission Holds Talks with Political Parties”

-

The Election Commission (EC) initiated its electoral discussions today by meeting with 12 political parties on the first day as part of its extensive consultation process preceding the upcoming national election. The initial meeting, commencing at 10:00 am and concluding at 12:00 pm, will be followed by a second session from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Bangladesh Election Commission office in Agargaon, Dhaka.

At the commencement of the dialogue, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin stressed the equality of all 54 registered parties, highlighting the importance of receiving well-considered suggestions and opinions on pre-election, election-day, and post-election processes. Nasir Uddin conveyed to the political parties, “You are the contenders in the election; you are the key players. We aim to act as impartial referees. Without your collaboration, ensuring a fair election would be challenging.”

He emphasized the vital role of political parties in ensuring a free, fair, and credible election, stating that without support from the primary stakeholders, the election’s integrity could be questioned. Addressing the issue of widespread poster use in Dhaka city, the CEC emphasized the illegality of such posters and urged their removal, warning of strict actions upon the announcement of the election schedule.

Regarding a potential referendum, the CEC mentioned ongoing discussions but noted the lack of official communication to the EC. He acknowledged the election’s unique circumstances under a special government and emphasized the additional responsibilities entrusted to the EC.

The timing of the dialogue was explained by the CEC, stating that the plan had been arranged earlier but was postponed to prevent conflicts with discussions led by the National Consensus Commission on electoral reforms.

The morning session included the Liberal Democratic Party, Bangladesh Congress, Bangladesh Muslim League, National People’s Party, Bangladesh Khelafat Andolan, and Jamiat Ulamaye Islam Bangladesh, as per the EC’s final list. The afternoon session will feature the Communist Party of Bangladesh, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD), Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (BSD), Bangladesher Biplobi Workers Party, Bangladesh Nationalist Front (BNF), and Bangladesh Nationalist Movement (BNM).
