Dhaka is a bustling city where residents of all social strata pursue their aspirations daily. These ambitions often involve long hours and frequent on-the-go meals. Fortunately, affordable food carts are ubiquitous, offering budget-friendly dining options. If you find yourself in Badda seeking a flavorful yet economical meal, look no further. We have compiled a list of four cost-effective food and beverage establishments that are sure to become your go-to spots.
Nestled opposite the rear entrance of BRAC University, a small food stall catches the eye with its quick service and diverse menu offerings. From classic fried snacks to carb-heavy dishes like chowmein and fried rice, the stall provides a wide array of choices at clearly marked prices. While beverages are available, they may not offer the best value for money.
With food prices starting at Tk 10 and the most expensive item on the menu well below Tk 100, this spot is a favorite among patrons. The chicken sandwich and shawarma are popular selections, offering a substantial portion of protein for Tk 70. The stall’s selection of dips is exceptional, featuring tantalizing options such as tamarind chutney and shorisha sauce, adding unique flavors to each bite.
For a post-meal refreshment or a midday pick-me-up, look no further than Cafeista, conveniently located next to Chillhouse. Serving a variety of hot and cold caffeinated and chocolate-based beverages at half the price of traditional cafes, Cafeista prides itself on using high-quality coffee sourced directly from North End Roasters. Despite its small size, the student-owned business boasts top-of-the-line coffee equipment, including DeLonghi machines that undergo weekly deep cleaning.
Priced between Tk 50 and 170, Cafeista’s menu offers a range of options, from robust espressos to creamy flavored drinks. I opted for a black coffee and Cadbury hot chocolate, priced at Tk 70 and Tk 80, respectively. The beverages were served at the perfect temperature, allowing me to savor the balanced flavor of the coffee and the indulgent sweetness of the hot chocolate.
Discovering a pani fuchka cart in Maddha Badda is akin to stumbling upon a rare gem. While fuchka and bhelpuri stands are commonplace, pani fuchkas are a rarity in the area, with the nearest ones located in Uttar Badda. Indian Pani Fuchka stands out as one of the few vendors offering this delicacy six days a week from 10 AM to 10 PM. Located near the back gate of BRAC University, this stand provides six crisp fuchka shells with a choice of five toppings, including sour tamarind, sweet tamarind, yogurt, olive, and Naga spice.
Among the toppings, the olive and Naga spice stood out for their distinct flavors. The olive topping evoked memories of sun-dried pickles, while the Naga spice added a fiery kick that spice enthusiasts will appreciate. However, caution is advised with the Naga spice due to its intense heat level.
Situated in the same network of alleys, Cafe Jhotpot offers a unique dining experience. Despite initial reservations, the cafe impressed with its popularity, ample seating, and distinctive menu items. The three-piece masala singara, flavored with house-made spice powder, and the torched pora ruti, a regional delicacy from Kushtia, were standout choices. Priced at Tk 30, the pora ruti delivered a delightful blend of caramel sweetness and milk powder richness, making it a must-try item in Badda.
While Cafe Jhotpot’s service may be slow, the quality of its offerings, including the torched pora ruti, more than compensates for any wait time.
