Anthropic’s CEO, Dario Amodei, has disclosed that AI models are now responsible for generating around 90% of the code utilized in the company. Addressing attendees at the Dreamforce event in San Francisco, Amodei confirmed his earlier projection that AI would handle most coding tasks within six months, a forecast that has materialized at Anthropic and its partner firms.
In response to inquiries about whether this shift diminishes the need for human engineers, Amodei proposed a contrary view. He explained, “If AI is responsible for 90% of the code, typically, you still require the same number of software engineers, if not more.” He characterized this change as a “rebalancing” that enables engineers to concentrate on the more complex programming aspects while overseeing AI systems.
This trend seems to be gaining traction within the industry. As per a TechCrunch report, Garry Tan, the CEO of Y Combinator, observed that approximately a quarter of current startups in the accelerator’s portfolio employ AI to write 95% or more of their code.
Nevertheless, there are indications that this transformation could impact employment dynamics. A study revealed a nearly 20% decrease in developer positions among individuals aged 22-25 since the introduction of ChatGPT, while seasoned engineers continue to be sought after.
