Kervens Belfort stole the show with a brace but the vibrant display of Edger Bernhard with a screamer and a brilliant assist left no less contribution in Abahani’s biggest margin win this season that put them jointly at the top of the Bangladesh Premier League

Abahani Limited took sweet revenge of their previous meeting as the Sky Blues handed arch-rival Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited a humiliating 4-0 defeat in the season’s first Dhaka Derby at Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka Wednesday evening.

Kervens Belfort stole the show with a brace but the vibrant display of Edger Bernhard with a screamer and a brilliant assist left no less contribution in Abahani’s biggest margin win this season that put them jointly at the top of the Bangladesh Premier League.

The first meeting between the two rivals in the previous edition ended 3-0 in favor of the Dhanmondi giant but Mohammedan stunned the six-time champion with a 4-0 win in the second phase of the league and the loss put the latter out of the title race.

With unchanged squad from last game, Abahani showed no mercy from the beginning as Sunday Chizoba’s fierce volley from just outside the box was gripped by Mazharul Islam Himel in the second minute.

The attacking trio of Abahani continued to cause havoc as they went close at the quarter-hour mark but Belfort’s headed pass towards Sunday after Nabib Newaz Jibon’s cross was cleared by Uryu Nagata near the goal-line.

Haitian winger Belfort broke the deadlock within a minute with a glancing header following a Mamunul Islam corner that bounced inside the net.

A bullet strike by Edger doubled the lead after the half-hour mark when a deflected diagonal cross from Belfort fed the Kyrgyz midfielder, who stepped up inside the danger zone before firing past Himel with a powerful volley.

Mohammedan went close only once in the 37th minute but Shahidul Alam Sohel tipped away Obi Moneke’s dangerous effort while their only chance in the second half ended up with Souleymane Diabate hitting the sidepost.

Edger architected Belfort’s second goal before the break showing great skill to skip past Habibur Rahman Shohag to deliver a cross for Sunday whose dummy allowed Belfort to smash home at the near post.

Jibon put more salts on Mohammedan wounds by extending the lead after the hour mark. Sunday laid down Mamunul’s long cross toward Jibon to see the national forward head home from six-yard box. With this, Abahani matched the number of goals they scored in total last three matches.

Abahani was well organized not only up front but also in midfield and defence with veteran Nasir Uddin Chowdhury and Brazilian Mailson Alves blended well at center-back giving as less space possible to Malian striker Diabate and Co.

With the win, Mario Lemos’ side have earned 10 points from four matches to move jointly at the top of the table alongside Bashundhara Kings and Saif Sporting Club while Mohammedan remained at sixth with as many points.
