The US military is getting ready for potential prolonged operations against Iran if President Donald Trump gives the order, according to two US officials who spoke to Reuters. This could lead to a more serious conflict between the two countries than seen before.
The officials, who requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the planning, have increased the stakes for the ongoing diplomacy between the US and Iran. Diplomats from both countries met in Oman last week to try to restart talks about Tehran’s nuclear program after Trump deployed more military forces in the region, causing concerns about possible new military actions.
On Friday, US officials announced that the Pentagon was deploying an additional aircraft carrier to the Middle East, along with thousands of troops, fighter aircraft, guided-missile destroyers, and other firepower capable of both offensive and defensive actions.
During a speech to US troops at a base in North Carolina, Trump mentioned the challenges of reaching a deal with Iran and the necessity of instilling fear to resolve the situation.
In response to inquiries about the preparations for potential extended military operations, White House spokesperson Anna Kelly stated, “President Trump is considering all options in dealing with Iran.” She emphasized that Trump weighs various perspectives on each issue before making a decision in the best interest of the country and national security.
The Pentagon chose not to comment on the matter.
Last year, the US dispatched two aircraft carriers to the region for strikes on Iranian nuclear sites. However, the “Midnight Hammer” operation in June was essentially a one-time US attack, with stealth bombers flying from the US to target Iranian nuclear facilities. Iran responded with a limited strike on a US base in Qatar.
The current planning is more intricate, according to the officials. In a sustained campaign, the US military could target Iranian state and security facilities beyond nuclear infrastructure. The risk to US forces is significantly higher in such an operation against Iran, given Iran’s formidable missile arsenal. Iranian retaliation could escalate into a regional conflict.
The officials anticipate that Iran will retaliate, leading to a series of tit-for-tat strikes and reprisals over time. The White House and Pentagon did not address inquiries about the potential risks of retaliation or regional conflict.
Trump has frequently threatened military action against Iran due to its nuclear and ballistic missile programs, as well as its suppression of internal dissent. He warned on Thursday that failing to find a diplomatic solution would have severe consequences.
