At least two schoolgirls reportedly committed suicide in Barisal and Shariatpur in separate incidents on Tuesday over their poor result in the Junior School Certificate (JSC) exam.

Shahida Akhtar, 14, an examinee from Barisal was upset over her result and hanged herself from the ceiling of her bedroom after coming from her school, family say.

Shahida was declared dead when brought into the Barisal Sher E Bangla Medical College Hospital, said Kawnia police OC Azizul Karim.

Acknowledging the incident, Mahbuba Hossain, headmaster of Barisal Government Girls’ High School, said, Shahida expected to score a GPA-5 (Grade Point Average) at the JSC examinations, but she got GPA-4 instead, which may have instigated to take her life.”

In Shariatpur, Fatema Akhtar, 14, a JSC examinee from Gosairhat upazila, committed suicide after failing in Mathematics in the exam.

Fatema was distressed over her result as she also failed the exam last year, said father of the deceased, Mostafa Khan.

Gosairhat police station OC Md Selim Reza confirmed the incident.
