10 VAR ERRORS this season revealed including Bruno Fernandes and Liverpool controversies

-

VAR remains a hugely controversial part of football and a number of managers have hit out at the technology this season.

But how many times has VAR made an error this campaign? Well, the Premier League’s Key Match Incidents (KMI) panel have logged the errors from the first 19 rounds of fixtures, with the five-person panel voting on each incident.

According to ESPN, the KMI panel has identified three incidents when VAR wrongly intervened and seven times when VAR failed to intervene. The panel also found there were 12 times when the on-field referee made an error, but the incidents did not meet the threshold for a VAR review as they were not clear and obvious.

Here, MirrorFootball takes a look at all 10 VAR errors so far this season…

Bournemouth star Dango Ouattara thought that he had scored a late winner against Newcastle back in August, but VAR intervened and ruled the goal out for handball.

The KMI panel unanimously agreed that the referee’s initial decision to award the goal was correct and VAR’s intervention was a mistake as there was “no conclusive evidence readily available of an accidental handball”.

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes was shown a straight red card after a challenge on Tottenham’s James Maddison when the Red Devils were trailing 1-0 in a match they went on to lose 3-0 in September.

VAR did not intervene and downgrade the red to a yellow and the decision was later overturned on appeal. The KMI panel unanimously agreed that both the referee and VAR had made a mistake, stating that Fernandes did not use “excessive force” or endanger Maddison’s safety.

In the game that ultimately proved to be Erik ten Hag’s last in charge of United, West Ham were awarded a late penalty after a clash between Matthijs de Ligt and Danny Ings after a VAR intervention.

Jarrod Bowen scored the resulting spot kick to earn West Ham a 2-1 win and the KMI panel unanimously decided that VAR was wrong to intervene and recommend that the referee overturn his original decision.

Brentford captain Christian Norgaard was sent off after he slid to try and meet a cross, but ended up clattering into Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and making contact with his knee in a game that ended 0-0.

The referee did not initially award a free-kick, but VAR intervened and Norgaard was sent off although the red card was later overturned on appeal. The KMI panel was ultimately split on this decision, but the majority felt the original decision was correct and that VAR made an error in advising the referee to send off Norgaard.

In Aston Villa’s 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace back in November, Ian Maatsen avoided a red card after bringing down Ismaila Sarr when he was through on goal.

Palace were winning 2-1 at the time and both the referee and VAR felt there was a covering defender and Maatsen escaped with a yellow card. However, the majority of the KMI panel felt Maatsen had denied an obvious goal-scoring opportunity and that both the referee and VAR had made a mistake.

In Everton’s 4-0 win over Wolves in December, Craig Dawson scored two own goals with the second coming after a free-kick was swung in by Dwight McNeill and Dawson inadvertently turned it into his own net.

However, the KMI panel felt that the goal should have been disallowed as Everton midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure blocked a Wolves player while in an offside position. They concluded that the referee and VAR made an error as Doucoure “clearly impact the defender’s ability to challenge for or play the ball”.

Aston Villa were not awarded a penalty after Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson grabbed hold of Morgan Rogers in their 2-1 win over Unai Emery’s side in December.

In a marginal vote, the KMI panel felt that VAR should have intervened as Anderson’s “holding offence is clear”. However, they note that the referee should have been sent to the pitchside monitor to “review whether there was an initial foul by Rogers on Anderson” which could have ruled out the chance of a penalty being awarded.

Brighton defender Pervis Estupinan escaped with just a yellow card for a foul on West Ham’s Max Kilman during their 1-1 draw in December.

VAR decided that the referee had made the right decision in not sending him off, but the KMI panel felt that both the referee and VAR had made an error as Estupinan’s challenge had “speed, force, intensity and endangers the safety of the opponent”.

Brighton striker Joao Pedro was only shown a yellow card after throwing an elbow at Brentford midfielder Yehor Yarmoliuk after he was pulled back in their 0-0 draw in December.

VAR also decided Pedro should not have been sent off for violent conduct. However the KMI panel unanimously felt that was a mistake and noted that, even though the Brazilian did not actually striker Yarmoliuk, the laws state that “no contact is needed” for it to be deemed violent conduct.

In Liverpool’s 5-0 thrashing of West Ham in December, the Hammers were not given a penalty when the score was just 1-0 after an off-the-ball incident involving Carlos Soler and Alex Mac Allister.

Soler went down in the box under pressure from the Liverpool star as Mohammad Kudus delivered a cross and both the referee and VAR felt the incident was not worthy of a penalty. However, the KMI panel were split and the majority ultimately felt that a mistake had been made as Mac Allister’s “only motivation is to impede the attacker”.
