Seminar on Electronic Payments for driving E-Commerce in BD

The e-Commerce Association of Bangladesh (e-CAB) and Software Shop Limited (SSL Wireless) jointly organized a seminar on “Electronic Payments for driving E-Commerce in Bangladesh” at Dhaka Westin Hotel on February 22, 2018. The speakers shared their views on the various aspects of E-Commerce in the country. The event was sponsored by the Visa, the world’s leader in digital payments.

It should be mentioned that e-CAB is the apex E-Commerce Association of Bangladesh playing a key role in consultative and advisory capacity, safeguarding the interest of country’s private E-Commerce entrepreneurs.

Visa has been operating in Bangladesh through its issuer and acquirer banks for more than a decade and it has been very supportive towards the growth of the Payment Card industry and trying to support the industry players to build a strong ecosystem for e-Commerce in Bangladesh.

e-CAB, SSL and Visa have been jointly working to assist the e-Commerce entrepreneurs, to acquire market information from the industry, to create policy dialogue among stakeholders and also taking various initiatives to build awareness to the masses and spread e-Commerce in the country. They are focusing on knowledge sharing activities and making best practices for the development of digital commerce and supporting Digital Bangladesh initiatives of the Govt. As part of their ongoing efforts, this seminar was specially organized to highlight the importance and implications of Electronic Payments for driving the E-Commerce sector.

The seminar started with a welcome address by Shomi Kaiser, President of e-CAB and followed by a panel discussion where speakers on e-Commerce breaking frontiers while promoting Digital Economy in Bangladesh. They have discussed the present status of the ecommerce industry in Bangladesh and stressed on the importance of Electronic Payments to flourish the industry. The first session were attended by Mohammad Abdul Haque, Finance Secretary at e-CAB, Tanvir Ahmed Mishuk, Director, e-CAB, Salman Rashid, CEO & Founder of Flight Expert, Abdul Muqit Ahmed, Director of Digital Services at Banglalink, Shahzada Redwan, CTO at SSL Wireless, and moderated by Fahim Masroor, CEO, & Ajkerdeal.

This was followed by another discussion on Facilitating Digital Payments in Bangladesh, Role of Government, Payment Networks and Financial Institutions. Here Visa shared its learning from the Global e-Commerce Trends & the potential impact it can generate in Bangladesh. The speakers also discussed on the benefits of growing electronic payment systems and the advantages it could bring to the society.

The second session was attended by Rezaul Hossain, Managing Director and CEO of Celero, Md. Abdul Wahed Tomal, CEO of Computer Jagat & General Secretary at e-CAB, Rezwanul Haque Jami, EM Solutions Architect at A2I, Prime Minister’s Office and Vice President at e-CAB, Syed Mohammad Kamal, Co-Chairman of Standing Committee on Digital Commerce under BASIS, Mostafizur Rahman Sohel, Managing Director of Advanced ERP, and Ashish Chakraborty, Corporate Affairs Director, e-CAB & COO at SSL Wireless, Nurul Huque Manik, Head of Cards, Personal Financial Services at Lanka Bangla Finance, and moderated by Mr. Karan Arora, Director, Global Government Relations–Visa. Both the sessions ended with a question and answer round with the audience.

All the panellists, representatives from Visa, SSL and e-CAB discussed about the problems and prospects of E-Commerce in Bangladesh and also proposed possible solutions to those issues after in-depth discussion and knowledge sharing among participants.

The organizers believe that this seminar will help increase awareness in the industry and create constructive dialog among various stakeholders which ultimately develops the industry and drives its growth.
